Keep the commandments
The morning sun had barely cleared the horizon when the elders of the valley gathered in the courtyard. Among them stood Caleb, a young man who had spent years studying the ancient manuscripts, and Elder Marcus, a teacher known for his comforting words of unmerited favor. The tension between them had been brewing for months, reflecting a deeper fracture in the community.

"The old code is a shadow, Caleb," Marcus said, gesturing toward the heavy stone tablets kept in the sanctuary. "We are a people of the Spirit now. The Messiah fulfilled the Law, the statutes, and the Sabbaths. To bind ourselves to them is to return to a yoke of bondage. We live under grace." Caleb looked at the gathered crowd, his heart heavy. "Marcus, if there is no law, there is no transgression. And if there is no transgression, what need do we have for mercy? What is there to repent of?"

He stepped forward, pulling a well-worn parchment from his cloak. "You say we follow the Messiah, yet we discard the very path He walked. The Scriptures tell us plainly: 'Whoever claims to live in him must live as Yeshua did.' Did He not keep the Sabbaths? Did He not honor His Father’s statutes?" A murmur passed through the crowd. Marcus frowned, shifting his weight. "He freed us from the letter of the law so that we might live by the law of love."

"But how do we define love apart from God's instructions?" Caleb countered, his voice ringing clearly across the stones. "John wrote it clearly in his letter: 'If you love me, keep my commandments.' To separate love from obedience is an illusion. We fool ourselves if we listen to the word but refuse to do what it says. James warned us that to hear and not do is self-deception."Marcus shook his head. "You risk making salvation a matter of human effort, Caleb. Salvation is a gift." "It is a gift bought at the highest price," Caleb replied softly. "But a gift rejected in practice is no gift at all. If we claim His name but reject His authority, we reject Him. John’s gospel leaves no room for compromise: 'Anyone who doesn't obey the Son will never experience eternal life but will remain under God's angry judgment.'"Caleb rolled up the parchment and looked Marcus in the eye. "Grace is not a license to live as if the Lawgiver never spoke. True faith doesn't abolish the law; it writes it upon our hearts so that we can finally walk as He walked."The courtyard fell silent. The choice stood stark before the community: to follow a faith of words, or to walk the narrow, obedient path of the Master they claimed to serve.
